Though they are inconspicuous in the summertime, in winter
they travel in flocks of 40 birds or more. In our neighborhood, they flock to the
winter fruit of the persimmon tree, which provides a generous meal.
If you are a new birder, let us encourage you to do your Cedar Waxwing bird watching
with binoculars. One of our favorite features of this bird is the fact that its
wing tips look exactly like a book of matches with little red ends. Perhaps most
remarkable about this bird is the unique, smooth appearance of its feathers. It does,
indeed, look as though it were shaped out of flawless wax.
