Shoveler Identification
The plush patch of cinnamon amid the black and white feathers
of the Northern Shoveler really steals the show.
If you sometimes have trouble telling one duck from another, here’s a
fellow that really stands out from the crowd. The Northern Shoveler’s
distinctive black bill acts as a strainer though which he sucks up plankton
and seeds. The female of the species is patterned very like a female
mallard. In flight, note the broad white barring on the wings.
